A splendid backdrop

On the reverse: Whitaker's Exhibition Studios, 50-51 Marine Parade, Southend-on-Sea. Written in pencil: J & B Utting, 66 Kennedy Road, Barking, Essex.

According to 1911 census details for the address, this is John Patterson Newby Utting, his wife Elizabeth and possibly one of his daughters, Miriam. In 1911, John was aged 59, born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in 1852 and he was a carpenter by trade. John had been married to Elizabeth (born in West Ham, Stratford in 1861) for less than a year and they were living with John's two sons and one of his daughters.
Going further back in time to the 1901 census, John was living at 4 Goodey Terrace, Barking with his first wife Sarah M. (born in Millwall, London, in 1855), three daughters and two sons.

BMD records show that John married Sarah Maria Wanstall in 1884 and she died in 1907, aged 53. He married Elizabeth M. Ecclestone in 1910. John died in 1926, aged 74; Elizabeth died in 1941, aged 79.
