Lost cinema

My Sepia Saturday image this week is a sad-looking cinema awaiting demolition.
Carlton Cinema, Carlton Street, Leeds on a snowy day in the winter of 1965. The cinema opened on March 29, 1920 and closed on April 3, 1965 - there's more information here.

You can find this week's other entries over at Sepia Saturday.

Looking at the map Carlton Street is not exactly downtown. Was that the reason for this cinema to close?
Sad picture.

It is sad, although 45 years is at least a decent run.

The security gate makes it look prison-like.

So many cinemas went this way including one I went to regularly in the 1950s when bingo took over.

Oh that is just up the road from here - and it has the look of so many little local cinemas of the age - the vast majority of which have now gone.

Poor thing tried to be grand right until the end, didn't it?

They just closed the only downtown movie theater here, and it was only ten years old.

Very sad indeed. I wonder what it looked like in it's "prime."

It doesn't look like that theater could seat over 800 people. It looks so small. Maybe in order to make it, the theater has to seat many more people. It's so sad to see all the old movie theaters die. Old theaters and independent book stores - both going away. It's a sad world.

There's a ghost story in that image. A good choice.
