Knave of Hearts

This weekend marks the Queen's Diamond Jubilee; today's photograph was taken in Hensall during village celebrations for her coronation way back in 1953.
This is me (aged 7) in our garden just before taking part in the fancy dress parade. I'm dressed up as the Knave of Hearts and that look of concentration on my face is probably concern about not dropping my tray of jam tarts. Mum made my red and white costume; this was in the days before tights and I remember her boiling stockings and knickers in a pan of dark red dye, then padding the knickers and sewing them to the stockings.

More jollification over at Sepia Saturday!

What a priceless photo. Yes, you do look very serious and worried that you'll drop the tarts. Your mom did a great job on your costume.

Oh happy days. This is a wonderful memory. I once had a fancy dress costume of Little Red Riding Hood made of crepe paper. This was fine until it rained, and you know what happened don’t you?

That is a stellar costume! Your mother went the extra mile on those tights, that's for sure.

These days it seems to be a competition to buy in the the most 'fashionable' fancy dress. Your costume beats them all!

Oh you were just a darling! I do love the outfit, and that hat, so very cool! I wish I knew more about this whole Queen's Jubilee not being from England I'm a bit in the dark! But I know it's a big thing!

What an adorable costume and a happy memory for you! How special for you to take part in two significant historical events. The Queen's Coronation and sixty years later to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.

Too lovely for words!!!
What a smart costume!!
You must have been pretty pleased to partake into those ceremonies. Who knew she would reign for so long. Charles certainly didn't expect that...

That is a cute photo of you in your costume. I was surprised to see how so many people celebrate the Jubilee.

WOW! I have a VERY SIMILAR photo of my mother dressed up as the Queen of Hearts and she is holding a plate also. It was taken in 1955. I thought she must have been going to a School Concert but now I think it must have been a coronation event. Thank you :)
