New lease of life

I had several images in mind to suit this week's Sepia Saturday theme of theatre but none were particularly unusual. Out and about in Kemp Town yesterday, I came across the perfect one.
It's the amazing Scarborough Open Air Theatre, the largest open air theatre in Europe; the stage is on an island in a lake and the audience are seated on the opposite bank. The theatre first opened for the summer season in 1932, closed in 1986, then reopened in 2010 after being completely renovated. The postcard probably dates to the early 1950s.

Check out the other theatrical images over at this week's Sepia Saturday.

That's some theatre! :)

The setting is dramatic in itself. It must've been quite an adventure attending a production.

I saw a show there in the 1960s but can't remember what it was.
Great spot - must go and have another look.

Open air theatre in Scarborough? Brrrrr! Take a rug to cover your knees. The new modern version looks spectacular.

I guess the audience sat on the other side of the water?

That's an interesting postcard and the theater looks like it would be fun to visit (although I have no idea what the weather is like there).

Not sure if my first comment went through, so I'll try again! I am happy you decided to post this open air theater...it would have such a cool performance to see! Lovely set!

Oh, this is fun! What a great concept. I'd be tempted to float quietly into the river on some sort of inflatable to get a better look.
